Houston, September 28, 2002 -- Unusual Vacation Rental of the month launched by Goin2Travel
From Italy to the Caribbean, vacation rentals offer a unique and often less expensive alternative to staying in a hotel. In large part the tremendous growth of the vacation rental industry is derived from the adage that "when in Rome do as the Romans do."
Goin2Travel Vacation Rentals (www.goin2travel.com) an online listing site for privately owned vacation rentals, in its first Unusual Rental of the Month, offers a truly unique Roman apartment that can be rented directly from its owner.
The apartment is 85 square meters of Roman history dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries. Located in Rome's Colosseum-Monti neighborhood, this charming apartment originally was used as a stable for traveler's horses. During the 19th century it was converted into a wine shop and most recently was completely renovated by an Italian newscaster.
The high vaulted ceilings have been preserved and the building's incredibly beautiful basement reclaimed. This 2 level apartment includes a "pompeian" bathroom and a Roman wall made of marble stones, broken vases and bricks, that date back to the 4th and 5th centuries. Staying here gives one the feeling of living among the gladiators and Roman politicians of the past.
According to the owner, "if a guest were so inclined, a hole could be made in the basement pavement that would lead to another room and into system of gallies that pass directly underneath the Forum/Colosseum area. " These underground passages were built centuries ago when Rome was lower by 10-15 meters.
"Very few people here have renovated their basements because anti-humidity treatment is extremely expensive. This Rome rental is unique in that regard." The basement level has been completed restored using typical "Roman" materials such as Travertine marble and is protected with a anti humidity system.
Guests staying are within a 5 minute walk to the Forum & Colosseum. Followina a day of exploration, a soak in a hot bath surrounded by the ancient Roman wall is certain to complete your transport back in time. Close your eyes, picture yourself to be a sort of "Messalina" with a servant dropping grapes into your mouth. If you fancy this sort of experience, this is the place for you to bring your imagination.
About the Area
The Monti-Colosseum Area has the feel of a small town (still very characteristic and "popular", with many artisans) with a number of famous artists (esp. writers, movie stars and directors) living here. Most famous (internationally) perhaps is film-director Mario Monicelli ("The Great War", "The Girl with A Pistol", "High infedelity", "The Unfaithfuls", "The passionate Thief"). The atmosphere in this "town" is such that if you spot him and say "Ciao Maestro, come stai?"...he replies "Bene, Grazie" with a smile, if you get what I mean.
