S&C's AVC Delivers Fast Reactive-Power Solution to Universal Studios Florida

Franklin, WI March 24, 2004 -– Universal Studios Florida® in Orlando was working on plans to open their newest ride in time for this summer’s busy tourist season. Based on the popular “Mummy” movies, the technologically advanced attraction uses Linear Induction Motors to provide a high-speed roller coaster launch. Universal wanted to make sure that the launch sequence did not draw down the voltage supplied to other parts of the theme park or that of other OUC (Orlando Utilities Commission) customers.

Universal turned to S&C for assistance. S&C immediately dispatched an engineer to the site to gather data. Upon rapid analysis of this data, it was determined that a 2,500-kVAR, 480-volt PureWave AVCä Adaptive VAR Compensator would ensure that the voltage remained within specifications. S&C committed to a fast-track schedule to furnish and install the system in time for opening day.

PureWave AVC Adaptive VAR Compensators, available in ratings from 500 kVAR to 100 MVAR and up, deliver fast reactive power compensation to solve voltage flicker problems and poor power factors caused by rapidly varying dynamic loads. PureWave AVCs have been installed around the world, in theme parks and a variety of heavy-industry applications, including welding, rock crushing, metal recycling, stamping, pumping, and shredding.

S&C offers a wide range of power quality solutions, including the PureWave UPSä System, the PureWave® Source-Transfer System, the PureWave DVR™ Dynamic Voltage Restorer, the PureWave DSTATCOM® Distribution Static Compensator, and the PureWave AVC™ Adaptive VAR Compensator.

S&C Electric Company, headquartered in Chicago, IL, specializes in customized turnkey power quality solutions. Their family of PureWave® Power Quality Systems have been installed at critical-process facilities worldwide to deliver reliable protection from the power quality problems that can disrupt operation.
